First off, Hancock isn’t the type of movie you think it is. I’m not going to spoil it, but theres a huge twist in the movie. In my opinion this twist kind of killed to movie for me and i wish the movie explained the twist a little more. I’m left a little disappointed, but it was still an alright movie.
What this movie tried to do or should’ve done is show how hard it is to be superhero. It’s not perfect like the comics or movies, because in real life people will always expect more from you and unless you’re absolutely perfect, you always be criticized. One scene that showed this was when Hancock rescued a guy from a oncoming train. So the guy’s stuck and in comes Hancock, and he flips the car over the railing and onto another car and then he stops the train which causes a backup of crashed trains behind. Instead of thanking Hancock for saving the guys life, the people in the movie booed him and criticized him on how he should of saved him. That got me kind of mad, because, first the crowd doesnt know anything about being a superhero and saving lifes, and second, the man was saved, no one died or even seriously injured. Sure material things were damaged, but a life was saved. Should Hancock be worried about how much the damage is going to cost or should he worry about the life at stake?
I think this quote from Spider man explains Hancock’s situation,”With great power, comes great responsibility.” I think the higher up you are in life, the more problems you’ll have. For example is it harder being a human right now or, say, a dog. It’s humans, because since we have bigger brains and are capable of doing more, we’re suppose to. Hancock is above humans, so since he has the power to do more, he should right? He does, but he’s not perfect at it, so people criticize. And if he doesn’t do anything, people will still criticize. Sometimes the criticism is due, and sometimes people should just lay off.
I’m not trying to biased or anything, because if i was the mayor and Hancock kept breaking things i’d be pissed because the city has to pay for it since Hancock cant. Hancock deserved some of it too, because he really didn’t give a shit and broke everything. So i can see why the city of LA would hated his guts. It’s just when you’re a superhero, you’re suppose to be perfect and when you’re not people dont know how to act. If you dont live up to expectations, people will turn on u.
Something that showed up in the movie a lot was the eagle. It was on his beanie, his necklace, there was a statue and it was everywhere. I dont know why it was there, or maybe it’s part of the ‘twist’. If you watch the movie, the costumes change when Hancock changes. When he didnt give a shit he looks like a hobo fighting crime while breaking stuff. When he did, he has this out fit that resembles the X-men and he saved lives with almost no collateral damage. The editing, camera angles, and lighting were alright i guess, because i focusing on trying to figure out the movie, if u watch it this might happen to u. Youtube and Nike must of paid a lot to get in this movie. Especially nike because it one of the most dramatic scenes, it only showed his shoes and u could clearly see the Swoosh.

hancock sounds like an interesting movie but it does sound like it would piss me off a lot to. I think you need a little work on the analytical aspects of your post because telling us how your annoyed at the story line isnt really analyzing it but it was still interesting and now i dont really feel like seeing the movie…haha. but good job on catching that eagle i definetly wouldnt have noticed that.

i agree with grace, i really think you need to talk more about the things that we talk about in class. but good pointing out the visual motif of the eagle and anaylzing that aspect of the movie. i sort of liked how you brought in the quote from spiderman, but again try to analyze more.

yoyoyo!
didn’t see the movie, heard from EVERYBODY that it sucked.um, i think some super hero movies are mostly interesting because of the super heros past of how they came to be and who is trying to destroy them.. did hankcock have any of that type of storyline?? i think you shouldve touched on the eagle a little more, maybe analyze that. i like nike shoes : )

This is what I’m talking about from my last comment, good job with the example with Hancock saving the one guy from the oncoming train. I haven’t seen this movie so I can’t say anything about the lighting advertisements, etc, but I say focus more on what we learn in class. I know you commented about focusing more on the twist then that, but yeahhh. Oh yeah and good job with noticing the eagle, but what does it mean?

Nice post, you talked alot about the movie and what happened in the movie and not realy about lighting or camera angles or costumes. but from what you wrote, i agree with what you say about having great power comes great responsibility. also the eagle thing sounds interesting becasue it makes me wantt to know what it means.

You know, you don’t say much in this post and I can’t really blame you.
The movie doesn’t say much.
I think it was very well cast. I liked the direction, editing, lighting, camera work, etc. But it clearly had some major narrative issues.
This is where your post needs to be. Hancock has a problem trying to figure out what kind of movie it wants to be. First, it’s the drunk/asshole superhero movie. Second, it’s the superhero movie w/ a twist (won’t talk about it because I don’t want to ruin the movie).
When a movie doesn’t make sense that is a reference to the narrative. You are a smart person. You noticed there was a change in the film that didn’t make sense. Now, talk about that intelligently. Talk about how midway through the film the filmmakers screwed up and talk about what they should have done vs what they were trying to do.
Be smart!
Think!
Trust your insticts and write about them, even if you screw up. Do it!
